Outdoor fitness training offers a refreshing alternative to traditional gym workouts, providing opportunities to engage with nature and vary exercise routines. Here are some best practices for outdoor fitness training:

  • Safety First: Assess the outdoor environment for potential hazards such as uneven terrain, obstacles, or weather conditions. Ensure participants have appropriate footwear and attire for the weather and terrain.

  • Warm-Up and Cool Down: Begin each session with a dynamic warm-up to prepare the body for exercise and reduce the risk of injury. Incorporate exercises that target mobility, flexibility, and activation of major muscle groups. Similarly, end sessions with a cool-down period to lower heart rate and stretch major muscle groups to aid in recovery.

  • Equipment Selection: Choose portable and versatile equipment suitable for outdoor use, such as resistance bands, agility cones, suspension trainers, or portable fitness mats. Ensure equipment is sturdy, safe, and appropriate for the exercises being performed.

  • Utilize Natural Features: Take advantage of the natural environment for exercise variation and creativity. Incorporate elements such as hills for incline sprints, benches for step-ups or tricep dips, and don’t forget to utilize the exercise setups found in many public parks. Avoid using trees/branches for bodyweight exercises as there is no guarantee as to the integrity of the tree.

  • Hydration and Sun Protection: Encourage participants to stay hydrated by providing water breaks throughout the session. Additionally, advise participants to apply sunscreen, wear hats, and sunglasses to protect against sun exposure, especially during outdoor training sessions in sunny conditions.

  • Programming Variety: Design diverse workouts that cater to different fitness levels and goals. Incorporate a mix of cardiovascular, strength, flexibility, and balance exercises to provide a comprehensive training experience. Vary the intensity, duration, and format of workouts to keep participants engaged and challenged.

  • Environmental Awareness: Respect the natural surroundings and wildlife while conducting outdoor training sessions. Avoid disturbing wildlife habitats, damaging vegetation, or leaving behind litter. Leave the outdoor training area in the same condition or better than you found it.

  • Safety Protocols: Establish emergency procedures and communication methods in case of accidents or injuries during outdoor training sessions. Ensure all participants are aware of safety protocols and know how to seek assistance if needed.

  • Weather Considerations: Monitor weather forecasts and be prepared to modify or cancel outdoor training sessions in case of inclement weather conditions such as extreme heat, cold, lightning, or heavy rain. Have a backup indoor location or alternative workout plan available if needed.

  • Client Communication: Keep open lines of communication with clients regarding outdoor training expectations, equipment needed, and any changes to the training schedule due to weather or other factors. Encourage feedback to continually improve the outdoor training experience.
